Middle of Nowhere
So, one facet of Les’s job is software training. His company sells software to Company X and Les will be scheduled to drive out and teach the employees of Company X how to use it. (Which is how we ended up north of Polokwane some weeks ago).
We are now in Vryburg. It’s somewhere west of Joburg.
We drove a long way to get here, anyway, about 5 1/2 hours through fields and cows and fuck all. I thought about taking pictures, but all those views of field and sky look the same and I have plenty from our last trip.
I was making jokes about how I could walk down the street to the nothin’ before we left, but there’s stuff here. It’s bigger than the last place we were, and bigger than the place we stopped for dinner on the way. It doesn’t have a McDonald’s, but it does have a KFC. Our B&B (a real B&B this time) boasts seven purebred breeds of fowl. They offer a tour of the birds upon request.
The rooms are nice, so that’s a relief. And you can’t hear the seven different breeds of chicken in the bedroom - though you can in the bathroom. I’d almost forgotten what it’s like to live around chickens. It’s a popular myth that roosters crow at sunrise. They actually crow all the damn time.
It’s really not a bad place, and I’m hoping Les can relax here a bit. He’s been working very hard and things are stressful. Here, he only has the one thing to do, it’s almost like a mini-vacation. Plus, there’s a proper bed. W00t!
In other news: I’ve made some progress dealing with international finances; a big relief right there. I’m still having problems with university stuff, I should call Kent today and have them send out another transcript.
I met Les’s oldest friend, Lee on Monday. We went out to dinner and hung out at his residence, which is not his house, but apparently a backpacker’s place. Very posh. There is a possibility I will be able to go there and cook. hope hope hope.
Lee was cool, but I didn’t get to talk to him much. He and Les walked off to talk about somethings that are not my business and I chatted with Phillip, another resident. Phil is a very nice guy, but I had a difficult time understanding him, as he is a low-talker.
On Tuesday night, Les and I planned on seeing a cheap movie and grabbing dinner. Upon examination of available movies, we decided to get take-away and stay home. We drove around for awhile trying to decide what to get when we happened upon an Indian place. The manager/owner/dude-in-charge deftly talked us out of take-away and into sitting down. He proceeded to serve us a three-course (and then some) dinner that was extremely delicious. We’re trying to organize a group meal for there on the 15th.
Oh! The cam belt on the car snapped on Sunday on the way to gaming, so we had to have the car towed back home. Les and I watched the end of Battlestar Galactica S1. I plan on starting season 2 very soon.
